Translating Art has spent years meticulously collecting paintings, lithographs, and drawings from the old masters, building an impressive and diverse collection.

 

His passion for art has led him to acquire works ranging from the intricate engravings of Albrecht Dürer to the haunting compositions of Francisco Goya, as well as the evocative landscapes of Vanvitelli. His collection extends far beyond these names, encompassing a wide array of artists whose works have shaped the course of art history, reflecting his deep appreciation for the artistic heritage of past centuries.

Jan Frans van Bloemen (1662-1749)

Fantastic view of Colosseo

Jan Frans van Bloemen was a Flemish painter renowned for his idyllic landscape paintings, heavily influenced by the classical tradition of Claude Lorrain. After settling in Rome, he became a key figure in the city’s artistic scene, earning the nickname “Orizzonte” for his mastery in rendering vast, atmospheric horizons. His works, characterized by soft lighting, harmonious compositions, and a refined sense of depth, captured the timeless beauty of the Italian countryside, making him one of the most celebrated landscape painters of his time.​

He was successful in Rome and received commissions for the painting of large views from famous patrons such as the Queen of Spain Elizabeth Farnese, the Roman nobility and the Pope. The artworks preserved in the Roman princely galleries Doria, Colonna, Corsini, Rospigliosi are proofs of his mastery.

Fantastic view of Colosseo and Landscape with Tiber, the Vatican Belvedere and Shepherds are today considered as prominent masterpieces of the painter. This pair of paintings bears the expertise by Andrea Busiri Vici, the author of the Van Bloemen’s Catalogue Raisonné. He considered this pair by far as he most beautiful of the author available in the private market.​​

Antonio Calza (1653-1725)

L'assedio di Vienna da parte dei Turchi, trittico

Antonio Calza was an Italian Baroque painter known for his dynamic and dramatic battle scenes. Born in Verona, he developed a style influenced by the great masters of his time, blending rich colors with intense movement to depict cavalry skirmishes and grand military encounters. His works often feature energetic compositions filled with powerful horses and soldiers in action, reflecting the theatricality typical of the Baroque period.

 

Calza's paintings were highly sought after by aristocratic patrons, and his legacy remains tied to his vivid and masterful representation of historical and military subjects.

Trophime Bigot (1579-1650)

San Sebastiano curato dalle pie donne

Trophime Bigot, born in Arles in 1579 and also known by various other names such as Teofilo Trufemondi Bigoti, is documented in Rome from 1620 to 1634, although he may have lived and worked there for several years prior, as there are no records of him in Provence since 1605.

 

In 1634, he signed his only Roman altarpiece, The Adoration of the Magi in San Marco, and in the same year, he was documented in Provence, where he worked until 1650. There, he completed three signed and dated altarpieces between 1635 and 1639, which, however, diverge from the Caravaggesque style of his Roman works, characterized by half-length figures and candlelit scenes.

Bigot's artistic production is characterized, as Sandrart [1675-79] also noted, by "half-length figures in nocturnal settings," a style evident in the painting examined here. This work can be closely compared to Judith Beheading Holofernes in the National Gallery of Parma, which was acquired in 1972 in Rome from the antiquarian Eugenio di Castro.

 

In both paintings, one can observe the same type and depiction of garments, as well as the similarly doll-like expressions of Judith and the two women extracting arrows from Saint Sebastian’s body. At first glance, both works offer a striking overall effect, yet upon closer inspection, they reveal certain naïveties and harshness in the details, softened only by the play of light.

Roman Charity

This painting depicts the young Pero nursing the old father Cimone, two figures shining in the darkness of the background.


The original painting Roman Charity (127 x 150 cm) made by Dirck van Baburen, between 1622-1624, is today preserved in the York City Art Gallery.

 

The aforementioned Dutch artist created this artwork after his Roman stay when he returned to Utrecht at the end of 1620. Profound assimilation of the Caravaggio's lesson is evident, also filtered by that of Bartolomeo Manfredi.


There are also two Roman charities: an artwork realized by Jan Janssens, now preserved at the Museum of the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid and another by an unknown author at the Douai at the Musée de la Chartreuse.
